The rail has been live since 2 March. October is the first full autumn month in which usage, not launch, is the story.
Banco de Moçambique says METIX, the platform behind the Sistema de Pagamentos Instantâneos de Moçambique (SPIM), has tripled its volume since entering production in March, to more than 11,000 transfers a day. That figure came with the Comité de Política Monetária (CPMO) communiqué of 30 July 2026. In a country with 130.9 electronic-money accounts per 100 adults, 11,000 a day is a small number, and October’s statistics are where we find out how fast it grows.
The October 2026 reference month will be captured in the central bank’s payments statistics cycle, with publication following in the months after. We write this in late September, so nothing below is an October result. It is a list of what to read first when the data arrives, and what businesses should have in place before then.
The rail and its rules
A free, always-on transfer between banks and wallets, with daily ceilings and mandatory entry.
Banco de Moçambique approved Aviso n.º 1/GBM/2026 on 25 February, effective 2 March 2026. It describes an electronic retail payment mechanism available around the clock, including weekends and holidays, in which the beneficiary receives funds immediately. The Sociedade Interbancária de Moçambique (SIMO) operates it. Interbank transactions ordered by individuals carry no fees or commissions, and law firm SAL & Caldeira records daily limits of 200,000 MT for individuals and 500,000 MT for legal entities.
Participation is mandatory for credit institutions and electronic-money institutions: the three wallet operators are M-Pesa, e-Mola and M-Kesh, alongside 15 commercial banks and 12 microbanks. Access runs through bank apps, websites and USSD, which needs no internet connection.
How instant settlement differs from what came before
The mechanism is a shared switch that moves value in seconds, so the wallet and the bank account stop being separate islands.
Before METIX, a person who held money in a bank account and wanted it in a wallet went through bilateral arrangements, with timing and charges set by each institution. SPIM puts SIMO in the middle as a single switch with common rules, so a bank customer can send to a wallet number and the beneficiary sees funds within seconds. Large-value interbank payments continue on the real-time gross settlement system that has been operating since November 2023, according to 360 Mozambique.
The commercial logic is that banks gain a way to reach the wallet-heavy population, while wallet operators gain a route to bank balances. Fee treatment for bank-to-wallet flows is not uniform, since 360 Mozambique reports that commissions on those flows are set institution by institution. That is a variable worth watching, because price is what moves habits.
Four numbers to read in the October data
Coverage, frequency, mix and migration decide whether the rail is used or merely available.
First, participant coverage: how many of the 15 banks, 12 microbanks and three wallet operators are live in both directions, not only connected. Second, frequency: transfers per active user per month, because a rail that people touch twice a year does not displace anything. Third, mix: the share of person-to-person transfers against merchant and business payments, where the 500,000 MT entity ceiling begins to bind. Fourth, migration: whether legacy channels, cash-outs at agents and older interbank transfers show falling volumes in the same months.
The July disclosure gives the baseline. Banco de Moçambique said in the CPMO communiqué, as reported by Executive Digest, that daily transfers had tripled since March to more than 11,000, and that access points to financial services rose 47% between December 2024 and May 2026. Against the denominator in Diário Económico, 130.9 e-money accounts and 33.8 bank accounts per 100 adults in the second quarter, the headroom is wide.
What a business does before the data lands
Merchants and payroll teams that wait for statistics will be behind customers who already use the rail.
A retailer, school or utility collecting payments should publish a METIX-compatible account or wallet reference now and test a collection by a customer on a different bank. A payroll manager should compare the cost of a salary run through SPIM, where individuals’ transfers are free, against the current method, and check whether the 500,000 MT entity ceiling fits the run size. A fintech should look at what the free individual tier does to its bank-to-wallet margin.
When October’s figures appear, read frequency and migration before the headline total. Our recommendation for treasurers and merchants: set a collection target for METIX in the fourth quarter, measure it monthly against the central bank’s published series, and rebalance payment channels on the evidence.
